    Asking about suicide directly is the best way to find out if someone is planning to suicide. Most persons-at-risk will be relieved to be able to come forward and talk about what they are thinking about. All of them want to live -- weather they are aware of it or not. The military have embraced asking about suicide directly as an effective tool. They use the acronym ACE. Knowing the ACE suicide intervention model is key to being a Wingman. ACE provides a simple yet extremely effective approach to helping someone who may be struggling with thoughts of suicide.

    Learning to listen for suicide talk is a skill that is covered in the ASIST workshop. The key is to watch of behaviors and talk that is out of character for someone you know. This PSA was put together by the folks at Did Hirsch Community Mental Health Center in Culver City CA and generously donated to the National Hopeline Network to promote the 1-800-SUICIDE 784-2433 number and network.
